Dr. Carlos Monteverde is a medical doctor from Ecuador specialized in immunology. He has achieved recovery from UC by using FMT. He runs a pharmaceutical ingredients company and is now trying to develop an elemental formula that is free of casein and other inflammatory ingredients – and tastes good.
Where do you live?
I was born in Chile, lived in Germany , Washington , Brazil , Colombia and Venezuela, but right now I am living in Guayaquil – Ecuador where I have my imports company.
What percentage better are you since FMT?
What was your diagnosis and what treatments did you try before FMT?
When did you have your first and last FMT treatment?
1 year ago, using my wife as donor.
How many FMT treatments did you need to see initial results and the results you have today?
It took 2 days to see a result and I did 8 days in total.
Were there other perpetuating factors in your illness or illnesses, or was your only issue a bacterial imbalance?
Stress , diet high in carbs , low in fiber.
What factors did you take into account when deciding to do FMT?
Donor health and ability to digest food.
What did your doctor/s say?
Did not consult with any colleague.
What was your FMT experience like?
No big deal.
What was your darkest moment when you were ill?
Thought about committing suicide some of the time. Felt miserable with a lot of pain.
What do you most enjoy about your post-FMT life?
No pain. I still restrict flour and some grains, but I can eat bread if I want to.
What advice do you have for others to deal with the fear and (perceived) risk about FMT, in the face of scepticism from treating doctors, friends and family?
The risk is minimal – if your donor is healthy and has all the lab bloodwork done
What advice do you have for someone trying to make a decision about FMT?
Try to talk to a doctor that has been through the procedure himself.
